One of the most exciting procedures we do in our office is our same day crowns. A crown is indicated for your tooth if it’s broken or has an old large failing filling. In the past, this was a two appointment procedure. In the first visit, we would prepare the tooth for the crown, take an impression, and send it off to the dental lab. While the crown was being made at the dental lab, the patient would wear a temporary crown. At the return visit (usually about two weeks later) the patient would return to have the crown bonded to the tooth.
Take a look at this photo. By the way, this is an actual Dr. Fryer patient. This patient had three teeth right in a row that needed a lot of attention. All three had broken fillings that had decay under the old fillings.
The old way to make crowns required the patient to get numb twice (ugh), included some messy impression materials, and let’s not forget the hassle of a temporary crown that came unglued from time to time. One “simple” procedure took at least 2 visits. Who has time for that?
Contrast that to our CEREC same day crowns. After preparing the tooth, we use a high tech scanner to scan the tooth into our CEREC software. We then design the new crown right in then and there! It’s pretty neat to watch.
After the design is complete, the new crown’s information is sent to our CAD CAM milling machine where it is made-right in our office! After that, we glaze the crown to make it look lifelike. Then we bond it in. It’s that simple.
How great do these three teeth look now?
Start to finish is usually about an hour and a half. Now that’s efficient!
