Kathy, a patient of Dr. Kevin Fryer, talks about her experience wearing an oral sleep appliance for her sleep apnea.
Kathy was diagnosed with Obstructive Sleep Apnea with an Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI) score of 55. The AHI measures sleep apnea severity. Anything over 30 is considered severe, and so Kathy was definitely in that category.
Studies show that untreated sleep apnea is associated with type 2 diabetes, heart attack, and stroke.
Although Kathy was given a CPAP for her sleep apnea, she did not like wearing it. Thankfully, Dr. Fryer offers an Oral Sleep Appliance, a great alternative to CPAP.
An Oral Sleep Appliance is a customized jaw repositioning appliance designed to reduce sleep apnea severity.
Kathy began wearing the appliance and her sleep apnea was retested. With the Oral Sleep Appliance in, Kathy’s AHI dropped from a score of 55 to a 6! What a huge improvement!
A score of 6 is not only MUCH healthier for Kathy’s body, but her snoring is gone! Her husband is thrilled!
Symptoms of sleep apnea include: snoring, daytime sleepiness, observed episodes of stopped breathing while sleeping, abrupt awakenings by gasping of choking, awaking with a dry mouth or sore throat, morning headache (due to lower oxygen levels because of restriced airways), difficulty concentrating, mood changes, high blood pressure, nighttime sweating, and decreased libido.
If you have symptoms of sleep apnea, or hate your CPAP, call Dr. Kevin Fryer at 440-585-4200 to get your customized appliance.
